Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server Capacity Planning Tool

Brief Description
The Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE) capacity planning tool lets you understand the hardware requirements for planning new FPE deployments. It also lets you evaluate the system requirements for existing deployments.

Overview
The FPE capacity planning tool helps you understand how CPU utilization and memory requirements vary by specifying different protection settings of FPE. This tool is based on the capacity planning guidance provided for Exchange Server 2010. The FPE capacity planning tool uses two specific reference architectures, the Standard Reference Architecture which is targeted at the small to medium size customers and then the Enterprise Reference Architecture targeting larger organizations. You can select a workflow associated with a reference architecture and specify CPU utilization and maximum memory constraints for your targeted hardware. You can specify the desired protection settings for each of the FPE server roles in the associated reference architecture, and describe the desired environment to be supported. After all these items are specified, the tool produces a summary of the hardware requirements with the number of servers that should be utilized to support the targeted environment given the FPE protection settings and the specified hardware constraints. The tool also provides performance guidance using graphs to understand performance aspects of the product and comparative performance of virtualized and non-virtualized scenarios with different operating systems and Exchange versions.

Voicemail: A story of unrealized potential

    image

    Brief Description
This whitepaper details the value that Exchange 2010's Unified Messaging capabilities offer to empower your users, reduce cost and manage risk by replacing your voicemail system.

    Overview
Voicemail is a relatively mature technology. It is so thoroughly established in users’ daily workflows that it has become practically invisible to the organization except as an ongoing expense. Because of their origins in telephony, voicemail systems tend to exist in their own silos, managed separately from other IT systems in general, and business messaging in particular. Many fail to provide the features and ease of use that users have come to expect from other types of messaging.
Yet voicemail is a critical communication tool for most workers. Given the right strategy, it can go from a basic service to a productivity-enhancing tool. One way to do this is to treat voicemail as just one more messaging modality. It is then possible to manage it using the same tools administrators and users know from email. A universal inbox is also the foundation for delivering advanced voicemail features across devices and platforms. Microsoft calls this capability Unified Messaging. Microsoft® Exchange Server is the key technology that enables it. The newest release, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, delivers voicemail functionality engineered from the ground up to improve productivity while helping you reduce the cost and complexity of your voicemail system.

Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator v6.3

    New Functionalities

Within the Total Disk Requirements results pane, you now will have three options:

    1. As Calculated - this is the default behavior where the calculator determines the most efficient design that ensures the least number of disks are deployed, while still ensuring you have minimized single points of failure by utilizing RAID and/or JBOD based on the decisions found in the "RAID Storage Architecture" and "JBOD Storage Architecture" tables.
    2. Entirely on RAID - Selecting this option outputs the results with each server utilizing the RAID storage defined in the RAID Storage Architecture results section.
    3. Entirely on JBOD - Selecting this option outputs the results with each server utilizing JBOD storage as defined in the JBOD Storage Architecture. There are two caveats worth mentioning here - first, if the design doesn't support JBOD, then JBOD isn't a viable option (e.g., you don't have 3 HA copies); second, choosing this option may result in a situation where you have a single point of failure (e.g., having only a single copy on JBOD in the secondary datacenter).

    Enhancements

    • Message profiles have been simplified in order to be more consistent with the rest of our documentation and partner tools. For example, instead of using "20 sent/80 received", the calculator now simply uses "100 messages". The individual breakdown isn't consequential to the overall design of the mailbox server IO and capacity planning algorithms.
    • Added additional column to the "Active Database Configuration / DAG" table on the Role Requirements tab to expose configurations where you will have a portion of your databases activated in the secondary datacenter as a result of a failure event in the primary datacenter.
    • Improved "Environment Configuration" table on the Role Requirements tab to indicate the Number of Mailbox Servers and Lagged Copy Servers / DAG in each datacenter.
    • Re-ordered tables in the Role Requirements Results section.

    Bug Fixes

    • Fixed the Secondary datacenter Active and Passive megacycle calculations to take into account the number of activated databases based on the failure mode the secondary datacenter can support.
    • Fixed the number of Active Databases / Secondary Datacenter Server after a first primary datacenter server failure to not display #VALUE for 2-node site resilient DAG solutions.
    • Improved the number of Active Databases after double server failure in the primary datacenter site resilient calculation to deal with 3 servers in the primary datacenters, as well as, when there are 2 copies in the primary datacenter.
    • Fixed an issue for site resilience scenarios that resulted in #DIV/0 errors as a result of determining the number of copies that can be mounted in the event of a double server failure when the solution only has 2 servers in the primary datacenter.
    • Fixed an issue for site resilience scenarios that ensures that double failure events don't result in more databases being activated on the remaining primary datacenter servers than possible when only 2 copies exist in the primary datacenter.
    • Fixed CPU core calculations to take into account the total number of DAGs being deployed in the situation.
    • Fixed active megacycle calculation to exclude database copy overhead for standalone deployments.
    • Fixed Lagged Copy Storage Architecture formula to be HA aware.
    • Fixed Secondary Datacenter Storage Architecture formula to ensure there is at least 1 HA copy being deployed in secondary datacenter.
    • Updated storage design tab improvements based on user feedback and added "in primary datacenter" for input HA/lagged copy instances.
    • Fixed formula for JBOD disk type to accurately reflect when there was insufficient database copies vs. requiring RAID.
    • Updated comments on various cells.

Exchange 2010 Large Mailbox Vision Whitepaper

    Brief Description
This whitepaper discusses how Exchange 2010 enables you to give users large mailboxes without breaking your budget.

    Overview
Giving your users the ability to store more e-mail has many advantages. Large mailboxes keep e-mail on the Exchange Server instead of allowing it to be scattered in Outlook Data Files (.PST files). That helps reduce the risk of data loss, improve regulatory compliance, and increase productivity among both workers and IT staff. The main barrier to implementing large mailboxes is the perceived cost and complexity of storing large amounts of e-mail data. Microsoft® Exchange Server 2010 is specifically designed to overcome these barriers. This paper discusses how Exchange 2010 enables you to give users large mailboxes without breaking your budget.

    Exchange Server Pre-Deployment Analyzer

    Brief Description
The Exchange Pre-Deployment Analyzer performs an overall topology readiness scan of your environment and provides you with a list of decisions that need to be made before you deploy Exchange Server 2010.

    Overview
You can use the Exchange Pre-Deployment Analyzer to perform an overall topology readiness scan of your environment. When you run the Exchange Pre-Deployment Analyzer, it provides a detailed report that will alert you if there are any issues within your organization, which could prevent you from deploying Exchange 2010. For example, the Exchange Pre-Deployment Analyzer will notify you if you haven't deployed the minimum required Exchange service pack on all your existing Exchange servers.
The checks performed by ExPDA are similar to the pre-requisite checks implemented (via Exchange Best Practices Analyzer) in the Exchange 2010 Setup program; in fact ExPDA is based off the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (ExBPA) engine. However, unlike Exchange 2010 setup, this tool focuses only on overall topology readiness and not the ability to run Exchange 2010 on the local computer. The scan also performs a deep analysis of each existing Exchange 2003/2007 server to verify that it has the necessary updates and configuration in-place to support Exchange 2010. The end report is structured as follows:

    • Critical - A configuration problem that will prevent Exchange 2010 from being deployed in the organization. For example, the Active Directory Forest is not operating in Windows Server 2003 Forest Functional Mode or higher.
    • Warning - A configuration item that may prevent customers having the best possible experience with Exchange 2010. A warning may also reflect some functionality that is not available in Exchange 2010.

ExPDA is another component in our vision to provide a seamless upgrade experience that reduces the complexities in deploying Exchange 2010. To start planning your upgrade, please utilize the Exchange Deployment Assistant. The Deployment Assistant allows a customer to create Exchange 2010 on-premises deployment instructions that are customized to their environment. The Assistant asks a small set of questions, and based on the answers, it provides a finite set of instructions that are designed to get a customer up and running on Exchange 2010. Running the Exchange Server Pre-Deployment Analyzer is now a recommended step within the pre-requisites section of the Deployment Assistant.

Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator v4.5

    Enhancements

There are only three improvements to the calculator in this release:

    • Added the calculations to help you determine the minimum number of global catalog cores you need to deploy with your architecture.
    • Added the ability to define different RAID parity settings for your Restore LUN architecture.
    • Improved the calculation of the formatted capacity of a disk drive.

    Bug Fixes

    • The following issues were identified and addressed in this release:
    • For HA solutions that chose to deploy in JBOD configuration, two fixes were made:
      • In certain scenarios, the calculator would calculate the number of mailboxes per database to be higher than the total amount of random IO available on the disk. As a result the calculator couldn't recommend a JBOD configuration. This has been corrected by rounding down the number of mailboxes per disk from an IO perspective calculation.
      • In certain situations the JBOD disk configuration isn't applicable. In past versions, the calculator would simply tell you this was because of "Insufficient Disk Capacity". This has been corrected to tell you if the insufficiency is based on disk capacity or IO capacity.
    • Addressed several CPU calculation related errors:
      • Fixed the issue where #VALUE was reported in the secondary datacenter processor core ratio table when you deployed only a lagged copy in the secondary datacenter.
      • Fixed the required mailbox CPU calculations to take into account certain site resilient scenarios where neither datacenter could support a single server failure (e.g. 2 member DAG).
    • Fixed an issue with the total disk count calculations with dedicated lagged copy servers as a result of rounding error.
    • Fixed an issue where /DAG LUN space totals didn't take into account the 2 LUNs / Backup Set architecture.
