Overview
Update Rollup 6 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) resolves issues that were found in Exchange Server 2007 SP1 since the software was released. This update rollup is highly recommended for all Exchange Server 2007 SP1 customers.
For a list of changes that are included in this update rollup, see KB959241.
This update rollup does not apply to Exchange Server 2007 Release To Manufacturing (RTM). For a list of update rollups applicable to Exchange Server 2007 RTM, refer to the section Update rollups for Exchange Server 2007 RTM in the Knowledge Base article KB937052.
This is a cumulative update rollup and replaces the following:

• KB945684 Update Rollup 1 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB945684)
• KB948016 Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB948016)

1. Fix for a security issue which has been assigned a severity rating of critical. More information about the issue can be found in the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-003.
2. Fix to allow Internet Explorer 8 to be used for Outlook Web Access (OWA) 2007. This does not include the OWA 2007 S/MIME control. We are still working on some changes in the control to make it work better with Internet Explorer 8. We will be releasing an updated version of the S/MIME control in a future rollup. Users using the S/MIME control should continue to use Internet Explorer 7.

Mailbox Server Role Storage Requirements Calculator v16.3

O Ross Smith IV anunciou no Microsoft Exchange Team Blog que a ferramenta Mailbox Server Role Storage Requirements Calculator foi actualizada para a versão 16.3.

De acordo com a página de updates no blog You Had Me At EHLO, estas são as correcções/melhorias:

• We added the calculated (or user defined) read/write ratio per mailbox tier into the Storage Requirements Results User Mailbox Configuration table.
• We added the server's calculated database read I/O percentage value into the Storage Requirements Results Disk Space & Performance Requirements table.
• Since the Recovery Point Objective input question only dealt with SCR, we moved that from the Log Replication section to the Standby Continuous Replication Configuration table.
• We added a new message profile, Extra Heavy.  With this additional profile, we now have 5 available messaging profiles.

O Ananth Ramanathan acaba de anunciar no blog You Had Me At EHLO que está disponível uma nova actualização de XML para o Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (ExBPA).

"The update applies to the tools shipped with Exchange Server 2007 systems with Service Pack 1 applied. It is currently only available for English language servers at this time.

The following tools have received an updated set of rules:
1. Best Practices Analyzer
2. Disaster Recovery and Performance Troubleshooter

What is contained in the update?
The update contains mainly bug fixes for the above tools.

The BPA tool is also run automatically during setup and readiness checks. We have updated the prerequisites XML file for setup. So any Exchange setup launched on a machine connected to the Internet will download the updated prerequisites file to check for the correct prerequisites."

Recente, num dia de chuva, passei uma tarde muito agradável a tentar melhorar os meus conhecimentos de PowerShell. Para isso, decidi ler Exchange Management Shell: TFM, um livro da autoria de Ilse Van Criekinge, Exchange MVP e vencedora do concurso Speaker Idol no Tech.Ed EMEA 2007.

Tal como a Ilse diz, este não é o tipo de livro que explica detalhadamente os conceitos técnicos do Exchange Server 2007, é antes de mais um cookbook, uma referência para os profissionais de Exchange em busca de soluções para as tarefas do dia-a-dia.

Overview
With Microsoft Office Outlook Connector, you can use Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 to access and manage your Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail or Microsoft Office Live Mail accounts, including e-mail messages, contacts and calendars for free!
Outlook Connector enables you to use your Live Hotmail accounts within Outlook:

• Read and send your Office Live Mail/Windows Live Hotmail e-mail messages.
• Manage your contacts in Windows Live Hotmail.
• Use advanced options for blocking junk e-mail messages.
• Manage multiple e-mail accounts in one place.
• Manage, and synchronize multiple calendars, including shared calendars to Windows Live Calendar from Outlook.

Note to Premium Subscribers: If you are currently using MSN Calendar service, the Outlook Connector 12.1 will automatically migrate your calendar to the new Windows Live Calendar service. Once upgraded to Windows Live Calendar, you will be able to synchronize multiple calendars, including shared calendars to Outlook! However you will no longer be able to access MSN Calendar through Microsoft Office Outlook.
In order to make sure that all of your calendar items on the MSN Calendar service are correctly migrated to the Windows Live Calendar, you should follow these steps:

1. With Outlook Connector 12.0 installed, synchronize your calendar in Microsoft Office Outlook with the MSN Calendar service one last time.
2. After synchronization is complete, do not create new items on the MSN Calendar site. If you do, you will have to synchronize again using Outlook Connector 12.0 before migrating to Outlook Connector 12.1.
3. Install Outlook Connector 12.1.
4. Start Outlook. At this point, the Outlook Connector 12.1 will upload all of your appointments and meetings to your new Windows Live Calendar.

• We introduced the capability for you to select the type of backup solution you want to utilize when analyzing the cost of various disk configurations.  You can now choose either VSS Clone, VSS Snapshot, or disable the feature all together.  We also adjusted the language to recommend usage of VSS clones or a solution that can guarantee fast recovery (3 minutes + log replay) in the event that you choose to deploy large mailboxes without continuous replication.
• We allow you to choose as to whether you want to price things out on an individual component perspective (e.g. disk cost) or from an entire solution cost.
• We allow you to enter in the number of storage enclosures and storage controllers, their relevant costs and power consumption as well.
• We simplified the SCC vs. CCR tab.

O Update Rollup 5 para Exchange 2007 SP1 está disponível. E agora?

Agora instala-se, claro está!

*MAS ESPEREM*! Antes de o fazerem, o pessoal do blog You Had Me At EHLO publicou uma informação bastante importante:

1) Service startup issue as described in KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944752 as well as our previous blog post.

• The rollup installer will now make the required modifications to the config files, even create new config files if not found. If customers have already modified the config files and have a generatePublisherEvidence setting, it will be left intact. Note that you still need the right version of .NET (see KB 944752) for the fix to take effect.
• Un-installation of the rollup will not rollback the addition of generatePublisherEvidence to config files.

2) Blank OWA logon page after installation of rollups 3 and 4, if you have modified logon.aspx file

• The rollup installer will now overwrite any OWA script files if required to ensure proper operation of OWA. You will need to redo any customization after installation of the rollup.

Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) resolves issues that were found in Exchange Server 2007 SP1 since the software was released. This update rollup is highly recommended for all Exchange Server 2007 SP1 customers.

For a list of changes that are included in this update rollup, see KB953467.

This update rollup does not apply to Exchange Server 2007 Release To Manufacturing (RTM). For a list of update rollups applicable to Exchange Server 2007 RTM, refer to the section Update rollups for Exchange Server 2007 RTM in the Knowledge Base article KB937052.

This is a cumulative update rollup and replaces the following:

• KB945684 Update Rollup 1 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB945684)
• KB948016 Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB948016)
• KB949870 Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB949870)
• KB952580 Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB952580)

O tamanho da actualização é aproximadamente 66MB (o UR 4 andava à volta dos 40MB). O processo de instalação é bastante simples, basta fazer download do ficheiro de actualização, de acordo com a arquitectura do sistema (x64 ou x86), fazer duplo clique e já está!

A instalação demorou aproximadamente 10 minutos na minha máquina virtual em Hyper-V. Quando o processo terminou pude constatar que a versão do Exchange Server 2007 é agora a 8.1.336.0, o que confirmei pela observação do event ID 1000 no Application Event Log.

• Managing Large Infrastructures with PowerShell v2 (Jeffrey Snover) - This session focuses on how to remotely administer both clients and servers throughout your enterprise, using PowerShell V2. Firstly, this session will cover the infrastructure requirements necessary to successfully use PowerShell V2. The session will then introduce and explain PowerShell scripts that solve real world administrative challenges on an enterprise scale.
• PowerShell V2 - the next stage in the IT revolution (Jeffrey Snover) - PowerShell V1 delivered a radically simplified approach to the traditional problem of interactive Shell, Scripting and Admin GUIs. Come and learn how V2 makes it easier to create and debug your scripts with a graphical environment, write production quality scripts using script cmdlets, modules and transactions, manage large distributed environments using WSMAN, improved WMI support and the new Unified Code Execution Model, and write smaller simpler scripts through improvements to the language and new/improved cmdlets.

• (EXC16) The Collaboration Blender -- This session is adapted from the Outlook and SharePoint: Playing Well Together article I wrote for Windows IT Pro magazine (subscription required). Exchange and SharePoint are both touted as collaboration solutions and have some overlapping functionality, so this session explores some of the overlaps and compares and contrasts what each is good for. (In other words, we spend a lot of time talking about Exchange public folders.) And where does Outlook fit into this mess? There's even a handy summary table!
• (EXC17) Exchange Virtualization -- As I confessed to my attendees, this session was a gamble that paid off. Back when I proposed the topic, there was no official statement of Microsoft support for Exchange virtualization (no, "Don't!" doesn't really count). I guessed that by the time November rolled around, Hyper-V would have finally shipped and they'd have shifted that stance -- and I was right. Because I focus more on the Hyper-V side of things, I invited VMWare to send a representative to the session to present their take on the subject. The resulting session was very good, and I learned a bunch of things too.
• (EXC18) Exchange Protection using Data Protection Manager -- Although a lot of the content here was the same material that I've already presented this year (what, 4-5 times now?), I did have to make some changes thanks to the brilliant curve ball that Jason Buffington and his crew in the DPM team threw me. You see, Connections now has all Microsoft speakers speak on one day (imaginatively named "Microsoft Day" for some reason), and that day was Tuesday. While Jason couldn't be here, Karandeep Anand (who is the DPM bomb!) was -- and I've been trading decks and VMs and material back and forth with Jason and Karandeep for over a year now. Rather than give a less brilliant copy of the session Karandeep had already done, I added in some new material focusing on the internals of the Exchange store and how that affects Exchange protection, removed the demo, and really attacked the topic from the Exchange side of things. I think it worked. Either that or it was people staying to get free copies of the DPM book that my publisher thoughtfully provided.

In order to move forward with various designs like large mailboxes, IT departments need to understand one of the chief costs associated with Exchange mailbox servers, namely storage. To that end, the Exchange 2007 Mailbox Storage Cost Calculator is designed to help you determine a portion of the mailbox server cost, namely the disk cost (purchase price and lifecycle power and cooling costs). The calculator helps in two ways:

1. The calculator takes a series compares a series of storage design configurations and determines their respective costs. The underlying goal here is two-fold:
   1. To show that you can achieve the same capacity and I/O requirements utilizing Small Form Factor SAS disks for relatively the same cost as Large Form Factor FC disks.
   2. To show that there are other disk solutions (e.g., SATA) that can be viable and reduce the disk footprint cost.
