Availability Reporting Management Pack for MOM 2005

Foi recentemente disponibilizado o Microsoft Availability Reporting Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager 2005. Este Management Pack permite verificar a disponibilidade de serviços como o SQL, Exchange, AD, IIS, etc. e pode ser bastante útil para controlar acordos de níveis de serviço (SLA).

The Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Availability Reporting Management Pack collects and analyzes data from the event logs of your servers, and generates reports that you can study to improve server availability and reliability. You can identify the causes for planned and unplanned downtime and take preemptive actions to decrease downtime in the future. Availability Reporting uses a number of metrics to provides data that you can view and customize to suit the needs of your IT organization. Each type of report includes tables or graphs with information about the availability and reliability of servers in your environment. You can input parameters, such as specific periods of time, to filter the data presented in the reports. Availability Reports provide detailed and specific availability and reliability information for several Microsoft applications. For applications not currently supported, Availability Reporting provides basic availability and reliability statistics at the operating system level. In such cases, Availability Reporting measures whether the operating system is running but does not measure whether applications are running.

Forefront Security for Exchange Server Beta refresh

A Microsoft rebaptizou já há algum tempo a família de produtos anti-vírus Sybari Antigen como Forefront Security for Exchange.

To protect Exchange Server 2007 against the latest malware and spam, Forefront Security for Exchange Server provides on-premise, server-level antivirus and anti-spam protection.
The Forefront Security for Exchange Server beta now includes support for multi-node active/passive SCC Exchange clusters. It also includes support for 32-bit installations for evaluation with the Exchange 2007 32-bit beta. While not supported in production, the 32-bit environment provides full product functionality for evaluation purposes.

Directory Update

Pediram-me recentemente se eu conhecia uma forma de permitir a certos utilizadores da minha empresa a edição de alguns campos de informação que aparecem na Global Address List (GAL). É claro que pensei imediatamente no GAL Modify Utility (GALMOD) da Microsoft, disponível no Exchange Resource Kit. Existe um artigo da Knowledge Base com informações detalhadas sobre esta ferramenta.
Mas o GALMOD tem algumas limitações, nomeadamente é necessária a sua instalação em todos os desktops de onde se vai realizar a edição da GAL.
Para superar estas limitações, a empresa do fellow MVP Jim McBee desenvolveu um substituto em versão Web do GALMOD: Directory Update.

The Directory Update service is a .NET web application written in C# that provides an authenticated user the ability to update some of their Active Directory attributes. Features of Directory Update include:

• Improved directory accuracy: City, State, Department, Company, Office, and Country attributes must be selected from a customizable validated drop-down list
• Drop-down lists can be converted to text fields and vice versa - New!
• Fields or entire sections can be hidden from the user interface - New!
• Administrator can restrict which attributes can be updated

Qualquer administrador de Exchange com alguns anos de experiência já utilizou com certeza a ferramenta ESEUTIL. Para quem nunca utilizou este utilitário, isso só pode querer dizer 1 de 2 coisas:

• Elevada competência técnica, cumprimento de todas as boas práticas e recomendações, manutenção do plano regular de backups, teste de patches em ambiente controlado, etc., etc., e tudo isto se paga com a boa saúde das bases de dados de Exchange.
• Muita, muita sorte!

No meu caso, apesar de gostar de me considerar bom no meu trabalho, já tive a infelicidade de ter de utilizar o ESEUTIL.

When a database is corrupt or damaged, data can be restored from backup or repaired using Eseutil. Eseutil is a command line utility that works with Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), database (.edb) files, streaming (.stm) files, and log (.log) files associated with an Information Store, in a given Storage Group.

The Approaches to Fighting Spam in an Exchange Server Environment technical guide consists of four main sections (Introduction, Definition, Challenges, and Solutions) that discuss options and solutions to provide practical approaches to fighting spam (junk e-mail) within the Exchange Server environment. This guide includes the introduction of a framework (Exchange Server 2003 Antispam Framework) which combines different methods for fighting spam within either a single or multiple Exchange Server environments and is comprised of connection-level, protocol-level, and content-level filtering. Approaches within this framework allow both administrators and end users to precisely filter and categorize spam and decide on their end whether it is spam or legitimate business e-mail. The Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant programmatically executes a set of troubleshooting steps to identify the root cause of performance, mail flow, and database mounting issues. The tool automatically determines what set of data is required to troubleshoot the identified symptoms and collects configuration data, performance counters, event logs and live tracing information from an Exchange server and other appropriate sources. The tool analyzes each subsystem to determine individual bottlenecks and component failures, then aggregates the information to provide root cause analysis.

Este cliente de correio electrónico permite não só aceder à conta da Hotmail (ou Windows Live Mail, se preferirem), mas também a qualquer conta POP3/SMTP de outros fornecedores.
A parte boa desta Beta é que está disponível para toda a gente, não é necessário um convite prévio. Para a obter, basta proceder do seguinte modo:

2. Find the tile for “Windows Live Mail Desktop beta”
3. Click on “sign up”
4. Click on “download”
5. Walk through the beta agreement and accept.
6. Download and you’re done!

Exchange 2007 no WSUS

Há tempos vi esta notícia no Bink e tenho andado desde então para verificá-la. Só agora consegui instalar um WSUS de testes e pude de facto confirmar que na lista de produtos a actualizar aparece o Exchange Server 2007.
Agora que se aproxima a Beta 2, os early adopters mais corajosos ficam com a garantia que o novo servidor de correio electrónico é actualizado com os mais recentes patches de segurança.
Reparem que também já aparece na lista a nova gama de produtos de segurança da Microsoft, denominada Forefront.

A minha OPML

Por vezes perguntam-me quais as minhas fontes para gerar semanalmente a rúbrica "Leitura de fim-de-semana" (provavelmente a primeira pessoa que me perguntou tal coisa foi o fellow MVP Arnaud Alcabez).

Foi recentemente disponibilizada a última versão do software de sincronização com dispositivos móveis: Microsoft ActiveSync 4.2.

Overview: Microsoft ActiveSync 4.2 is the latest sync software release for Windows Mobile-based devices. ActiveSync provides a great synchronization experience with Windows-based PCs and Microsoft Outlook right out of the box. ActiveSync acts as the gateway between your Windows-based PC and Windows Mobile-based device, enabling the transfer of Outlook information, Office documents, pictures, music, videos and applications to and from your device. In addition to synchronizing with a desktop PC, ActiveSync can synchronize directly with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 so that you can keep your e-mail, calendar data, tasks and contact information updated wirelessly when you’re away from your PC.
Changes in ActiveSync 4.2 help resolve connectivity related issues with Microsoft Outlook, proxies, partnerships, and connectivity.

O conteúdo disponível em Exchange 2007 online help pode inclusivamente ser utilizado como uma valiosa ferramenta de aprendizagem, mesmo para quem não tenha acesso às versões Beta.

Spam, by Monty Python

Da Wikipedia:

"Spam é uma mensagem eletrônica não-solicitada enviada em massa.
Na sua forma mais popular, um spam consiste numa mensagem de correio eletrônico com fins publicitários. O termo spam, no entanto, pode ser aplicado a mensagens enviadas por outros meios e noutras situações até modestas. Geralmente os spams tem caráter apelativo e na grande maioria das vezes são incômodos e inconvenientes.

Existem diversas versões a respeito da origem da palavra spam. A versão mais aceita, e endossada pela RFC 2635, afirma que o termo originou-se da marca SPAM, um tipo de carne suína enlatada da Hormel Foods Corporation, e foi associado ao envio de mensagens não-solicitadas devido a um quadro do grupo de humoristas ingleses Monty Phyton.

This document outlines the key benefits that the Exchange Management Shell provides to Exchange administrators and developers, and explains how cmdlets are structured, and how data is managed.
• Quick Reference for Exchange Management Shell: Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 introduces a new management platform called the Exchange Management Shell, based on Microsoft Windows® PowerShell, formerly codenamed "Monad". This topic provides a list of many frequently used cmdlets, important conventions, and useful tips. The information is presented by feature area, such as recipient, transport, and database administration.
• Quick Reference for Outlook Voice Access: Outlook Voice Access lets UM-enabled users to access their Exchange 2007 mailbox using analog, digital, or cellular telephones. Actualização do filtro Junk Email do Outlook (Junho 2006)

Está disponível uma nova actualização para o filtro Junk E-mail do Outlook 2003.

"This update provides the Junk E-mail Filter in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with a more current definition of which e-mail messages should be considered junk e-mail."

Vulnerabilidade do Exchange/OWA

A Microsoft publicou o boletim de segurança MS06-029 que descreve uma nova vulnerabilidade que afecta o Exchange Server 2000 e 2003. Esta falha de segurança afecta mais concretamente o Outlook Web Acess e pode permitir execução remota de código. Mais informação nos seguintes links:

Estão disponíveis os patches correctivos para o Exchange 2000 SP3, Exchange 2003 SP1 e Exchange 2003 SP2, mas atenção, a aplicação destas actualizações de segurança poderá quebrar o serviço da BlackBerry ou da GoodLink.
