MVP Summit Parte 3: Tecnologia

Como não podia deixar de ser, o Summit também é sobre Tecnologia. O programa MVP foi criado para distinguir a participação em comunidades técnicas, pelo que uma das formas que a Microsoft tem de nos agradecer a nós, MVPs, é dando-nos em primeira mão algumas notícias sobre os seus produtos.
Infelizmente, tudo o que nos é dito está ao abrigo de um Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), pelo que não nos é permitido revelar nada ao público em geral. Mas, julgo que não cometo nenhuma inconfidência se vos informar que tivémos muitas sessões sobre o Exchange 12. Provavelmente a maior parte dessa informação será também revelada na conferência E12 Developer Conference.

Para terminar gostava de salientar 2 curiosidades sobre o campus em Redmond:
1) Foi engraçado verificar que existe uma sala de apresentações chamada Kodiak (lembram-se do nome de código do que era suposto ser a próxima versão de Exchange?)
2) Tive a oportunidade de visitar um laboratório de SQL, uma vez que conheci lá um português que trabalha na Microsoft (ver foto).

E pronto, para o ano há mais (se fôr reconduzido como MVP, claro.)

MVP Summit Parte 2: os Tugas

Pois é, os Tugas arrasaram ;-)
Como ainda sou novo nestas andanças, deu finalmente para conhecer os outros colegas MVPs portugueses. O que tenho a dizer sobre eles é que são todos espectaculares (e acreditem que não estou numa de a55 kissing, é pura sinceridade).
Gostava que fosse possível incluir aqui um apanhado das melhores anedotas que pudémos trocar, mas o decoro e as regras da decência impedem-me de o fazer.
Alberto, João, João Paulo e Paulo, temos de repetir isto mais vezes.

(Private joke: ó João Paulo, vai chamar a Maria para dentro!)

Uma palavra também para a "galera" brasileira, também todos muito "cool". O mais difícil foi mesmo explicar-lhes que eu era um MVP de "Exchénge" ;-)

MVP Summit Parte 1: as Pessoas

Vamos lá então fazer um balanço do que foi o MVP Summit '05. Do meu ponto de vista, o mais importante não é a tecnologia nem as notícias bombásticas, mas sim as pessoas.
São as pessoas que constituem o valor acrescentado num evento como este, a possibilidade de interagir com outros MVPs e pessoal da Microsoft, o associar uma cara a um nome.
Neste aspecto, o Summit foi muito positivo para mim, pois para além de ter revisto algumas caras conhecidas, tive ainda o previlégio de conhecer pessoas como Paul Robichaux, William Lefkovics, Paula Kingsley, Benjamin Mateos, Chris Scharff, KC Lemson, Melissa Travers, Arnaud Alcabez, Gladys Rodriguez, Goran Husman e muitos outros cujo nome agora não me lembro.
Ah, é verdade, e a viagem de regresso também é uma boa oportunidade para conhecer pessoas, certo Eric?
O balanço é francamente positivo neste meu primeiro Summit. Espero para o ano poder repetir a experiência.

É já amanhã, 28-Set, que parto para Redmond, EUA, para participar no MVP Global Summit 2005.
Para mim é uma estreia e as expectativas são altas: conhecer outros MVP's, ter acesso a alguma informação extra sobre Exchange e, claro, ver uma apresentação do Steve Ballmer.

Exchange Server 2003 Folder Listing DoS

A Secunia publicou recentemente um alerta relativamente a uma vulnerabilidade do Exchange Server 2003, que possibilita um ataque do tipo Denial of Service (DoS):

Description:
A vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, which can be exploited by malicious users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service).The vulnerability is caused due to an unspecified error in the handling of requests to list public folders, and can be exploited to crash the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe) via an IMAP4 request.Successful exploitation requires that the following conditions are met:
* User tries to list public folders using IMAP4 version 4rev1
* Exchange server does not allow IMAP4 users to list public folders.
* User does not have a private mailbox on the server.

Solution:
The vendor has issued a hotfix, which can be obtained by contacting Microsoft Product Support Services.

Actualização de documento: "The Role of Groups..."

O documento The Role of Groups and Access Control Lists in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Deployment foi recentemente actualizado.
É uma leitura bastante interessante para quem ainda utiliza Exchange 5.5 e está a pensar numa actualização para a versão 2003. Entre outras coisas, o documento faz uma analogia entre as Distribution Lists e os grupos de distribuição do Windows 200x, e tece algumas considerações sobre migrações e actualizações.

Já agora, lembrem-se que se estão a pensar numa migração de Exchange 5.5 para uma nova floresta/organização , não é possível migrar as Distribution Lists utilizando apenas as ferramentas de migração da Microsoft. Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB902953)

Acaba de ser disponibilizada mais uma actualização do filtro de Junk Email do Outlook 2003.

"This update provides the Junk E-mail Filter in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 with a more current definition of which e-mail messages should be considered junk e-mail. This update was released in August 2005."

Exchange SP2 CTP disponível a 19-Agosto

De acordo com úm post do Harold Wong e de notícia publicada pela Mary Jo Foley, a Microsoft vai disponibilizar uma Community Technology Preview (CTP) do Service Pack 2 para o Exchange Server 2003 a 19 de Agosto.
A versão CTP funciona como uma pré-beta e tem algumas limitações:

"Please be aware that CTP releases of any product will not display the stability of a shipped Microsoft product. Customers may encounter problems with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 that could possibly result in a loss or destruction of data. Some of the mobility features contained in this CTP download are not yet available for testing, pending availability of Windows Mobile 5.0 devices that have the Messaging & Security Feature Pack installed. Those devices will be available later in 2005 and 2006. Also some of the security features in SP2 are only available when used with Outlook 2003 SP2 which will not release until later in 2005. This build is available only in English."

Netcabo actualiza Exchange para a versão 2003

Foi com agrado que recebi a notícia que o ISP português Netcabo concluiu a actualização da sua plataforma de correio electrónico para a versão Exchange Server 2003.
Há já algum tempo que os front-ends haviam sido actualizados (notou-se uma pequena melhoria gráfica, mas a versão do OWA era à mesma a 2000), mas só agora com a actualização dos back-ends, os utilizadores podem disfrutar das novas funcionalidades e melhorias a nível gráfico introduzidas com o Exchange 2003.
A propósito das versões de front-ends e back-ends, aqui fica uma pequena tabela com as configurações suportadas (disponível no artigo da Knowledge Base Q829057):

Microsoft recruta 2 ex-IBM

O mercado IT é agressivo por natureza. Depois da saída polémica de Kai-Fu Lee da Microsoft para o seu rival Google, agora é a própria Microsoft que resolveu contratar 2 ex-funcionários da IBM: Julio Estrada e Bob Congdon.
Os dois sujeitos estavam envolvidos no desenvolvimento do Lotus Notes, pelo que é mais ou menos óbvia a sua integração na equipa do Microsoft Exchange.

Nova versão do ExBPA (v2.1a)

A Microsoft disponibilizou uma nova actualização da ferramenta Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (ExBPA). A nova versão, 2.1.7599.4 contém correcções a alguns bugs e está disponível para download aqui.

O spam não compensa - Parte II

Depois de há alguns dias o spammer mais famoso da Rússia ter aparecido morto, chega-nos agora a notícia que um dos "reis do spam", Scott Richter aceitou pagar 7 milhões de dólares, num acordo à margem do julgamento de que era alvo.
A beneficiária do montante, a Microsoft, vai empregar 6 milhões em actividades contra o crime (sim, o spam é crime!) na internet.
Só cá em Portugal é que parece que os spammers continuam impunes. Também, com as leis relativamente permissivas e a qualidade do nosso sistema judicial, não é de admirar.

Spam em português

Sim, é verdade, existe muito spam em português, isso não é novidade. Pessoalmente, acho que a lesgislação comunitária é muito permissiva nesse aspecto.
Mas não é sobre isso que vos quero falar, é antes sobre um novo site - www.eliminarspam.com - que contém variada informção de combate ao spam em português. Infelizmente não existe muita informação técnica em português, pelo que é de louvar estas iniciativas.
A informação disponível no site ainda não é muita, mas já é um começo.

Limites de mensagens e links lentos

O Exchange Server 2003 tem algumas características que o tornam particularmente adequado para cenários de "branch offices" ligados a um escritório central, nomeadamente a possibilidade de utilizar o modo offline (em conjunto com o Outlook 2003) e uma melhor compressão das comunicações.
Uma das grandes preocupações de quem é responsável por links com largura de banda reduzida é a limitação do tráfego que atravessa esse link. É por isso de todo conveniente que se limitem os tamanhos máximos das mensagens que os utilizadores remotos podem enviar ou receber.
No entanto, um dos grandes problemas do Exchange foi que não existia maneira de garantir a aplicação das políticas de dimensão das mensagens no lado do cliente. Vejamos, se um cliente que tenha um limite de envio de 2MBytes enviar uma mensagem de 10MBytes, essa mensagem vai ser enviada do seu Outlook até ao servidor central, atravessando o link, e só aí vai ser rejeitada.
Esta limitação foi recentemente corrigida com a disponibilização de 2 hotfixes, um para o Exchange, outro para o Outlook 2003.

A maior parte (será a totalidade?) dos mecanismos de anti-spam são baseados em filtros Bayesianos. Nesta função pode dizer-se que este tipo de filtros são bastante eficazes. Mas a questão que se levanta é: poderão os filtros de Bayes ser "ensinados" a jogar xadrez?

A Microsoft continua com a sua estratégia de adquirir empresas que possam complementar a sua linha de produtos. Poupa-se ao trabalho (e despesa) de desenvolver tecnologia que outros já fazem e bem.
O último visado foi a FrontBridge Technologies, uma empresa com algumas soluções bastante interessantes ao nível da compliance, segurança e continuidade.

"With this acquisition, Microsoft will deliver a service for enforcing compliance through archiving, minimizing spam and viruses, and ensuring e-mail availability in the case of a disaster.

Exchange Server Error-1018

O erro mais temido pelos administradores de Exchange será, provavelmente, o -1018 (JET_errReadVerifyFailure). Quando acontece quer dizer uma de duas coisas:

• O número lógico da página lida não corresponde ao endereço físico dessa mesma página na base de dados;
• Erro de checksum.

Na prática quer dizer que aconteceu uma corrupção da base de dados (suores frios) e será melhor começar a procurar o último backup (será que foi feito? estará em bom estado?).

Para nos ajudar nesta situação a Microsoft acaba de disponibilizar Exchange Server Error ‑1018, How Microsoft IT Recovers Damaged Exchange Databases, um documento com explicações detalhadas das condições que podem levar a este erro e como a própria Microsoft IT lida com este evento.

Enquanto estive no Tech.Ed tive a oportunidade de assistir a uma sessão do Jurgen Hasslauer, MSG381 Exchange Server Sizing, onde me foi dado a conhecer uma ferramenta fantástica: HP Storage Planning Calculator for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
Esta ferramenta fornecida sem qualquer encargo pela HP (é necessário apenas fazer o registo) facilita bastante a tarefa de planeamento do storage a utilizar num servidor Exchange 2003. São levados em linha de conta factores como capacidade, desempenho, tempo de backup, tempo de restore, perfil dos utilizadores e até temos a possibilidade de efectuar uma análise financeira do investimento!
Tal como o Jurgen afirmou, é uma razão para ficar preocupado, uma vez que a ferramenta faz grande parte do trabalho dele (e meu)!
Não deixem também de visitar o site HP ActiveAnswers for Microsoft Exchange Server, onde nos são disponibilizadas mais ferramentas e ajudas para os processos de planeamento e implementação de soluções baseadas em Exchange Server.

DKIM submetido ao IETF

A Yahoo e a Cisco submeteram a tecnologia DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) para apreciação pela Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), por forma a tornar este mecanismo de autenticação de email um standard da indústria.
O DKIM combina a tecnologia DomainKeys da Yahoo e o Identified Mail desenvolvido pela Cisco, tendo as duas empresas anunciado que iam combinar estas tecnologias com o intuito de criar uma especificação royalty-free para combate ao mail não desejado.
Este mecanismo de autenticação de mail torna-se assim no principal rival do Sender ID, tecnologia desenvolvida pela Microsoft e a Pobox.com.
O IETF estará reunido em Paris entre 31-Julho e 5-Agosto para discutir o DKIM. Quem não espera pelos resultados desta reunião é a Yahoo, que já implementou o DKIM, à semelhança do que o Hotmail fez com o Sender ID.

Uma das críticas que têm sido apontadas à tecnologia Sender ID, e que tem funcionado como um travão à sua implementação, é o facto de ser proprietária da Microsoft.
Para esclarecer dúvidas sobre este assunto, o gigante informático acaba de disponibilizar o documento Sender ID Framework and Intellectual Property Overview and FAQ. Aqui fica um pequeno excerto:

Q1. Do end users need to sign this license?
A. No. End users do not need to sign this license.
Q2: Why is Microsoft asking people to take a license?
A: Microsoft is not aware of any issued patent claims covering the Sender ID specification, and Microsoft does not require anyone to sign a license with Microsoft to implement or use the Sender ID specification.

ATE FAQ

A minha experiência no Ask The Experts (ATE) no Tech.Ed 2005 permitiu-me compilar uma pequena lista de perguntas mais frequentes (FAQ), daí o nome deste post: ATE FAQ.
Como é óbvio, em termos estatísticos o intervalo de amostragem não é de todo representativo do universo de utilizadores/administradores de Exchange, mas pelo menos dá-me a desculpa para escrever sobre alguns temas que certamente preocupam uma boa parte desse grupo.

1. Novas funcionalidades do SP2: este espaço é curto para descrever todas as novas funcionalidades deste service pack, mas não posso deixar de salientar o Direct Push, Remote Wipe, funcionalidade anti-spam integrada, aumento do limite da DB para 75GB na versão Standard e os dicionários de Português-Ibérico e Português-Brasileiro no OWA. 2. Exchange 12: existe alguma ansiedade sobre a próxima versão do Exchange, prevista para sair em finais de 2006, início de 2007. Para além das funcionalidades novas do SP2, o Exchange 12 deverá ainda adicionar:
• Suporte a 64-bits
• Log shipping
• Backup contínuo
• Unified messaging
• Setup por server roles
• Serviço melhorado de pesquisa
• Monad, interface por linha de comando
• Envio de anexos através de links do SharePoint

3. Suporte a Public Folders: a Microsoft anunciou que descontinuará o serviço de Public Folders, no entanto isto só deverá acontecer na versão a seguir ao Exchange 12. Restam-nos portanto uns 6/7 anos para começar a pensar na migração para o SharePoint.

4. Stretched Clusters: o assunto dos clusters dispersos geograficamente (até algumas centenas de kilómetros) foi um dos pontos de interesse. A Microsoft suporta stretched clusters desde que cumpram alguns requisitos, nomeadamente que utilizem hardware certificado do Windows Server Catalog. Aqui fica uma lista de links sobre o assunto:

Os últimos 2 dias do Tech.Ed

Neste momento estou a fazer as malas para me ir embora de Amesterdão. É uma cidade bastante agradável e que vale mesmo a pena visitar. O Tech.Ed já lá vai, agora falta decidir onde vai ser o do próximo ano. Eu votei em Praga.
Aqui fica um resumo dos 2 últimos dias, relativamente às sessões relacionadas com messaging. Alguns destes temas são verdadeiramente sexy, pelo que espero desenvolver em futuros posts ou até em potenciais artigos:

Dia 3:
• Best Practices for Disaster Recovery - Lessons Learned from Exchange 2003 Stretched Clusters Depolyments - um grande tema, mas que perdeu bastante devido ao mau domínio da lingua inglesa pelo Jurgen Hasslauer. A minha experiência no Ask The Experts (ATE) deu para perceber que os geo-clusters estão na ordem do dia, principalmente por razões de prevenção de desastre. Esta tarefa ficará bastante mais simplificada no Exchange 12 devido ao suporte de log shipping.
• Tech.Ed Party - como já é habitual, Quinta-Feira é dia de festa. Este ano contou com as actuações dos Scizzor Sisters e NU2, bandas de tributo aos Scissor Sisters e U2, respectivamente. Não foi mau, mas podia ter sido melhor.

Dia 4:
• Analysing Exchange Server 2003 with SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services - muito bom, mesmo às 8:30 da manhã e depois de uma noite de copos consegui ficar desperto. É fantástico o que se consegue obter dos tracking logs do Exchange. Juntem o Log Parser 2.2 e os SQL Reporting Services e obtemos relatórios verdadeiramente úteis e informativos.
• Exchange 2003 Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Based Backup and Restore - esta sessão deixou-me com algumas dúvidas: numa sessão anterior fiquei com a ideia de que o NTBackup não é VSS-aware, nesta foi dito o contrário. A investigar...

A avaliação final deste evento só pode ser positiva. Embora pessoalmente tenha sentido falta de sessões mais técnicas (lembrem-se que este evento tem uma abrangência muito grande de pessoas), o intercâmbio pessoal acaba por colmatar esse facto. É de facto uma oportunidade única para conhecer alguns peritos em tecnologias Microsoft.
Para o ano há mais!

Midsize Business Server?

Depois do Small Business Server parece que a Microsoft vai apostar num novo pacote destinado às empresas de média dimensão. O suposto Midsize Business Server é composto pelo Windows Server 2003 Standard, Exchange Server 2003 Standard e o Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Workgroup Edition.

Notícias do Tech.Ed (finalmente!)

Ufff! Não tem sido nada fácil, acreditem. A verdade é que tenho andado verdadeiramente ocupado aqui no Tech.Ed (sim, sim, não pensem que é só passear e beber umas Heinekens :)). Entre o assistir às sessões, dar uma mãozinha no Ask The Experts (ATE) e terminar um artigo para o site MSExchange.org, não me sobra muito tempo para escrever no blog.
Mas vamos então ao que interessa:

Dia 1:
• Exchange Server: Today and Tomorrow - foi uma sessão que me desapontou um pouco, mas a verdade é que as minhas expectativas também estavam por baixo. As melhores notícias foram dadas nos EUA. Valeu pelas demonstrações do Scott Schnoll sobre as novas funcionalidades do SP2: Direct Push, Sender ID, gestão de Public Folders, maior compressão do Offline Address Book (OAB) e IMF. Falou-se ainda (pouco) do Exchange 12, mas nada que não se soubesse já.
• Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer Tool - uma boa apresentação do Paul Flaherty, recheada de demonstrações.

Dia 2:
• Designing a High Availability Exchange 2003 Solution - Scott Schnoll no seu melhor, abrangendo assuntos diversos. Muito boa informação sobre Stretched Clusters, mas sobre este assunto falarei mais tarde.
• Exchange Server Sizing - Conceitos muito bons, pena é que o locutor não dominasse a língua inglesa.

Ask The Experts:
Sobre o meu trabalho no ATE posso dizer que tem sido uma experiência muito gratificante, tanto pelas questões colocadas como pela oportunidade de conhecer pessoas como o Siegfried Weber, Mark Fugatt, Thierry Deman, Neil Hobson, Mark Arnold, Sean O’Driscoll, Scott Schnoll e Paul Flaherty (espero não me ter esquecido de ninguém).

Quanto ao resto, a conferência está a decorrer ao nível habitual. Também deu para conhecer alguns conterrâneos, como por exemplo o Alexandre Janeiro, fellow MVP.
E por agora é tudo, vou tentar actualizar este blog na medida do possível. Certo é que tenho alguns assuntos na manga que espero desenvolver mais tarde.

Tech.Ed aí vou eu!

É já amanhã que parto para Amesterdão para assistir ao Tech.Ed 2005. Além de seguir com muita atenção as sessões de messaging (obviamente) vou também tentar assitir a outras interessantes de management, segurança e infra-estruturas.
Quanto a notícias, parece-me que os principais assuntos já se esgotaram na edição Americana, que ocorreu no ínicio do mês de Junho. Mesmo assim, pode ser que a Microsoft saque um coelho da cartola.
Obviamente que vou escrever aqui o que de mais interessante por lá se passar.
Ah, é verdade, vou também trabalhar no stand Ask The Experts (ATE) de Exchange. Se forem até à Holanda passem lá para me cumprimentar.
